Please join me on March 20th for the 2013 DLI Employment Rights and Safety Forum at Towson University.

Last year’s first DLI Employment Rights and Safety Forum drew over 600 business owners and professionals spanning every industry from Construction to Legal Firms. This year, our agenda will include hands-on workshops, panel presentations, and sessions focused on giving you the key facts and information you need to know related to safety, compliance, and employment law regulations.

Based on last year’s feedback we’re also incorporating more opportunities for you to get involved in the conversation and get hands on experience by putting some of the forum topics to work.

You cannot afford to miss this event! Breakfast and lunch will be provided and there is no cost to attend; however, space is limited. We will be back in touch when registration is open.

Sincerely,

Ron DeJuliis
Commissioner, Labor & Industry
Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS’ WORKPLACE SAFETY POSTER CONTEST FOR KIDS KICKS OFF 11TH YEAR

DES PLAINES, IL (September 19, 2012) – Children aged 5-14 will again have an opportunity to illustrate the importance of being safe at work by entering the 11th annual American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) kids’ ‘Safety on the Job’ poster contest opening today and running through February 14, 2013. As one of last year’s poster contest winners, Abigail Helser of Madison, AL, wrote in her winning poster “Safety Sam Wants You to be Safe Too”, ASSE is hoping to receive another record number of talented entries illustrating being safe at work.

The contest aims to teach children about the importance of being safe at work and what occupational safety, health and environmental professionals do to protect people, property and the environment. A record number of entries, 2300, were received last year for the contest from the U.S. and 11 other countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Columbia, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

The winning poster from each of the five age groups is featured on the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week poster distributed worldwide. The five grand prize winners and 15 runners-up each receive prizes and are recognized at NAOSH kick-off events and worldwide through ASSE communications and publications. The posters that best illustrate safety on the job will win the contest. NAOSH Week runs from May 5-11, 2013, and Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day is May 8. For poster contest rules and information please go to http://www.asse.org/newsroom/naosh/poster-contest.php.

As for participants, the contest is open not only to ASSE members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, but to all children sponsored by an ASSE member. ASSE members can sponsor schools and the children of their co-workers. Those seeking an ASSE member to request sponsorship can check with their local ASSE chapter which can be found at www.asse.org/membership/findachapter.php or contact customerservice@asse.org. ASSE has streamlined its entry process. Applicants can now upload their posters from the poster contest web site. The entry process for groups or schools has also been updated. Both individual and group entry forms are available in print and electronic format.

All poster contest winners, contestants and their families along with ASSE members, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) staff and OSHA Alliance partners, regulators and legislators, are invited to attend the NAOSH kick-off and poster contest awards events in Washington, D.C., this May 5 and 6. Events are scheduled to be held at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the National Zoo and more. OSHA is also a NAOSH supporter.

Poster contest winners will be announced the first week of March on the www.asse.org/naosh web site. In addition to being featured on the NAOSH poster, poster submissions are displayed in Washington, D.C., during NAOSH Week at the DOL and at ASSE’s annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition to be held in Las Vegas this June.

SafeStart®, www.safestart.com, a company that provides safety awareness and safety skills training, is the ‘Premier Sponsor’ of NAOSH Week and the annual ASSE kids’ ‘Safety on the Job’ poster contest. It is a division of Electrolab, a company based in Belleville, Ontario, that has been serving the educational and industrial markets for more than 35 years.

Founded in 1911, the IL-based ASSE is the oldest professional safety organization and is committed to protecting people, property and the environment. Its more than 34,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members manage, supervise, research and consult on safety, health, transportation and environmental issues in all industries, government, labor and education. For more information go to ASSE’s poster contest web page at http://www.asse.org/newsroom/naosh/poster-contest.php or contact ASSE customer service at customerservice@asse.org or 847-699-2929.
